What Causes Stretch Marks
They occur when the skin is stretched for whatever the reason. This commonly happens during pregnancy when the belly grows. However, it can happen with weight gain or even during puberty when growth occurs rapidly. There are even some medications and medical conditions that make this more pronounced.
When the dermis stretches further than its capabilities, it breaks. As the skin is stretching, there is often a lack of collagen, which is what causes it to finally break. Think of this like a rubber band. Your skin can stretch pretty far, but if it do not have good elasticity, then the dermis fibers will break.
There is also evidence that shows that this can be hereditary. If other members of your family suffer from this, then you are also at a predisposition to it. This could be because the elasticity of the skin is genetic or simply due to medical conditions, but this is something to be aware of. The good news is that there are ways to treat them as well as prevent new ones from forming.
Usually the first sign of a stretch mark is itching. Before you even see the marks, you may notice that the area seems to be itchy. Shortly though, the itchy stretch marks will appear. When it first shows up, it will likely be red, due to the blood rushing to the injury site. Over time though, the blood vessels will leave the area and you will be left with either silvery or white stretch marks.
The Areas Affected by This
A common misconception is that only the stomach can get a stretch mark. Just about any area of the body can be affected.
Other Common areas include the hips, thighs, breast, and arms. There are also a variety of causes, a common cause is pregnancy stretch marks, which are found on the stomach.
Obviously as the stomach grows the skin stretches which causes the dermis layer of the skin to break. This affect up to 80% of pregnant women and really depends on how elastic your skin is. The less stretchy your skin the higher your chance for stretch marks during pregnancy.
It could be on any area of the body where weight was gained. In fact, stretch marks on breast are common during puberty as many girls develop quickly. Even body builders who bulk up quickly can be prone to getting a stretch mark or two.
